Which free AI image generators allow commercial use?

Depends

Some do. On free plans, ChatGPT, Ideogram, Canva AI and Adobe Firefly allow commercial use, and Higgsfield's terms don't restrict it. Leonardo, Recraft and Freepik free plans are personal use only, and Bing Image Creator's terms don't clearly grant commercial use.

Quick answers

What's the best free AI image generator for commercial use?

We don't rank image quality, only rights. On rights alone, ChatGPT, Ideogram, Canva AI and Adobe Firefly allow commercial use on their free plans. Ideogram and Firefly ask you not to remove watermarks or Content Credentials.

Is Leonardo AI free for commercial use?

No. On a free subscription, Leonardo owns what you create. Paid subscribers own their outputs.

Can you use Google's Nano Banana for free commercially?

Through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, including the free quota, yes. The Gemini app's terms don't clearly say, so we mark the app unknown. Preview models on Vertex AI are excluded.

Are open-source image models free for commercial use?

Many are. Stable Diffusion's older open models and its Community License models, and Qwen-Image's open weights under Apache 2.0, allow it. FLUX.1 [dev] uses a non-commercial licence with conditions, while FLUX.1 [schnell] is Apache 2.0.

Tool by tool

  • OpenAI ChatGPT images (Sora discontinued)

OpenAI's ChatGPT assistant and its image generation.

    • Free / Go / Plus / Pro Yes

You own ChatGPT image output and OpenAI assigns you whatever rights it has in it. Outputs may not be unique. Sora's app and web versions shut down on 26 April 2026 and its API on 24 September 2026.

  • Ideogram

AI image platform with apps, an API and its own open model.

    • All plans Yes

Ideogram does not claim ownership of your images, assigns you any rights it has, and does not restrict commercial use. You must not remove watermarks.

  • Canva AI (Magic Media)

AI image tools inside Canva, including the Magic Media text-to-image generator.

    • Free / Pro Yes

You own Canva AI output and may use it for any lawful purpose, except output that edits or includes Canva library content, which stays under Canva's content licence.

  • Adobe Firefly

Adobe's AI app for images, video, audio and vectors, with Adobe and partner models.

    • Individual plans (Free / Standard / Pro) Yes
    • Creative Cloud for teams / enterprise on an Eligible Plan Yes

Adobe treats Firefly output as your content, but you must not strip watermarks or Content Credentials. Adobe's IP indemnity covers only Creative Cloud for teams/enterprise customers on specific plans, and is capped at US$10,000 per output or claim.

  • Higgsfield

AI creative suite for images, video and voice from prompts or references.

Higgsfield does not claim ownership of your outputs and does not restrict commercial use, whichever model you pick. Many of its models come from other companies, and their use policies also apply. It may embed invisible watermarks / C2PA provenance.

  • Nano Banana (Google Gemini image, incl. Imagen)

Google's Gemini image models for generating and editing images.

    • Gemini app: Free / AI Plus / Pro / Ultra Unknown
    • Gemini API / Google AI Studio (free and paid quota) Yes
    • Vertex AI (Google Cloud), GA models Yes
    • Vertex AI preview models (e.g. Nano Banana Pro / Gemini 3 Pro Image, Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, Imagen 4.0 upscale) No

Google won't claim ownership of Nano Banana images. The Gemini API and AI Studio are meant for professional or business use. The consumer Gemini app terms state no plan-level commercial rule. Preview models on Google Cloud, including Nano Banana Pro, are for evaluation only.

  • xAI Grok Imagine

Image and video generation inside xAI's Grok.

    • Free / SuperGrok Depends

You keep ownership of your outputs and the terms don't limit commercial use, but you must credit the service (per xAI's brand guidelines) when you use Output.

  • Krea

Creative AI suite for images, video and 3D, with many models and upscaling.

Krea allows personal or professional use, but commercial rights to generated content depend on your plan and Krea's other conditions.

  • Leonardo.ai

AI platform for creating, editing and animating images and video.

    • Free No
    • Paid subscriptions Yes

Paid subscribers own what they create. On a free subscription, ownership of your outputs goes to Leonardo, so don't plan to sell free-tier images.

  • Recraft

AI image and vector generator and design platform.

    • Free No
    • Paid Yes

Free tier: no commercial use and Recraft owns your images. Paid plans: you own the images (no AI-training use).

  • Freepik / Magnific

AI image, video and audio tools plus a stock library (formerly Freepik).

On a free account, Magnific's AI outputs are personal, non-commercial use only. Paid plans (Premium, Premium+, Pro) get Magnific's rights in the output, but its AI terms also bring in the model makers' own terms and licence agreements without naming them, and AI music can't go on streaming platforms. So on paid plans, it depends on the model and the output.

  • Bing Image Creator / Video Creator

Microsoft's free text-to-image generator in Bing, plus Bing Video Creator.

    • Free Unknown

Microsoft does not claim ownership of your creations but takes a broad licence to them, and says the service is for entertainment purposes. Commercial use is not expressly granted.

  • Stability AI (models & DreamStudio)

Maker of Stable Diffusion and other image, video and audio models.

    • Community License (SD 3 / 3.5, SDXL Turbo and other Core Models) Yes
    • Enterprise Yes

Depends on the model. Older open models (Stable Diffusion 1.5, 2.x and SDXL 1.0) use OpenRAIL licences with no revenue cap. Newer Core Models (SD 3 / 3.5, SDXL Turbo and others) use the Community License: commercial use only under US$1M annual revenue, Enterprise licence above that.

  • Qwen Image (Alibaba)

Alibaba's open image model, strong at text inside images.

    • Open weights (Qwen-Image, Qwen-Image-2512, Qwen-Image-Edit-2509; self-hosted, Apache 2.0) Yes
    • Qwen app / Qwen Studio (free and paid subscriptions) No
    • Alibaba Cloud Model Studio API Unknown

The open weights are Apache 2.0, so self-hosted output can be used commercially. The Qwen app and Qwen Studio are for private, non-commercial use only, even though the rights in outputs are assigned to you.

  • FLUX open weights ([dev] family, schnell, klein)

Black Forest Labs' open-weights FLUX image models you run yourself.

    • Self-hosted [dev] family (FLUX [dev] Non-Commercial License v2.0) Depends
    • Self-hosted FLUX.1 [schnell] / FLUX.2 [klein] 4B (Apache 2.0) Yes

Depends on the model. The [dev] weights (FLUX.1 [dev], Kontext [dev], Krea [dev], FLUX.2 [dev], FLUX.2 [klein] 9B and others) are non-commercial, but the licence says you may use the images for any purpose, including commercial. FLUX.1 [schnell] and FLUX.2 [klein] 4B are Apache 2.0.
